In injection molding, two different materials (also known as components) are frequently used to produce one part.
The materials can be completely different (hard and soft polymers) or have the same base but with different color.
In the 2 Shot Molding process, the first component is injected into the cavity and cooled down up to a certain point.
Afterwards, the first component is transported, for example, by a rotating dish tool or a robot, to a new cavity to inject the second component on top of it.
It is important to consider the different processing temperatures.
The remelting of the first component is not wanted.
At the same time, both components should stick together.

Injection Molding Process: In the 2 shot molding, the second component (white) is injected on top of the first component (black).

Based on the work of Max Otto Lorenz and Alfredo Pareto, there is a versatile and widely used analysis technique calle dthe ABC-Analysis. The aim of it is to differentiate between significant (A) and less significant (C). This way, the objects to be examined are classified.
The objects with a relatively high contribution (e.g. on the result, value etc.) and a low presence (in quantity, consumption, frequency, etc.) are classified as A-objects, while the objects with a relatively low contribution and high presence are classified as C-objects.
The ABC analysis can often be found in the classification of products, services, related groups (customers, suppliers, employees, etc.).
The ABC analysis can be used as a decision tool as well as a visualization tool and as a basis for further analyzes. It is easy to learn and implement and is suitable for a medium to large database.
In plastics technology, this analysis method can be applied to the material storage, for example. Masterbatch and additives have a low presence, but make a high contribution to the result and are therefore A-objects. Common PP materials can easily be replaced by others and are therefore more C-objects.

When covalent chains of SAN (Styrene-Acrylonitrile Copolymer) link to Polybutadiene chains Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymer us build, short ABS.
This amorph thermoplast contains 15-35 % Acrylonitrile, 5-30 % Butadiene and 40-60 % Styrene. The properties can be greatly influenced by different mixing ratios.
ABS is characterized by its low weight.
The break and impact resistance, as well as high hardness and scratch resistance make it suitable for housings and toys, furthermore mouth pieces of music instruments are build out of it.
Aqueous chemicals can not harm ABS.
The raw material is gray to colorless and can be produced in any color if master batch is used.
ABS can be found primary in the automotive and electrical industry.
Furthermore it is popular for electroplating and thermoformed parts. ABS is also used in 3D printers.

In order to change the properties of plastics additives are used during compounding.
Additives are auxiliaries which influence the properties of the plastic granules during processing or the usage of the plastic part.
A distinction is made in reinforcing agents, functional additives and fillers.
Reinforcing agents are e.g. Fibers. Glass or carbon fibers are used to improve the mechanical properties. They increase the strength and rigidity of the components.
Functional additives are e.g. heat stabilizers, impact modifiers, UV stabilizers and processing aids. In general a few percent of the additive result in specific properties.
Fillers e.g. chalk or talc are usually inexpensive additives that reduce the price of the plastic granules.

An annular test gauge made of high-quality hardened steel is called adjusting ring. The steel is ground very fine and lapped for this usage. The adjusting ring serves as a reference dimension for multiple bore gauges, like the three point inside micrometer or the inside measuring surface of calipers.
Mostly setting ring gauges are knurled on the outside so that they are well in hand when measuring or adjusting the bore gauges.
