It is easier to use a single value to compare different polymers with each other.
Therefore, for the viscosity commonly the MVR (melt volume-flow rate) is used.
This value describes how much mass of a polymer is flowing during 10 minutes at a specific temperature and pressure (mostly 2,16 kg or 5 kg) through a given capillary.
The measurement of the volume can be done directly during the experiment, therefore no additional step is necessary.
The higher the MVR, the smaller the viscosity of the polymer.
The used unit is cm^3/ 10 min.

Worldwide (as of 2018) around 400 million tons of plastic are processed each year.
During and after the use of a plastic part, it can get fragmented due to different effects. From larger plastic parts, small pieces of plastic arise.
If the size of these particles is in between 5 millimeter and one micrometer (0,001 mm), the particles are called microplastic.
Continuing the decomposing process smaller parts arise.
If the size lies between one micrometer and 100 nanometer (0,0001 mm) they are called sub-microplastic.
Below a size of 100 nanometer the particles are called nano plastics.
In how far microplastics affect people and the environment is an important issue and is being intensively researched.

Reactive, chemical connections, which exist separately are called monomers.
Monomers are low-molecular and will be combined by a chemical reaction to branched or unbranched polymers.
Most monomers do have a C=C double bond.
Plastic melt might contain residual monomer. At higher temperatures, they will evaporate, which can be realized in many cases by its smell.

Plastic granules are typically stored in small casks (bag ware), large casks (octabins) or in silos.
The octabin is an octagonal container made of corrugated cardboard.
It is designed in a way that a binding quantity of 1 t can be packaged for most plastic granules.
Often, an octabin is additionally laid out with a thin plastic foil into which the granules are filled.
If the same material shall be supplied to multiple machines octabins are used on a central material station.

The family of polyesters include the thermoplastic polyethylene perephthalate (PET), which is produced by polycondensation.
PET is particularly known for the blow molding product of the PET bottles, but it is also used for films and textile fibers.
PET exists in the amorphous (A-PET) and semi-crystalline (C-PET) state.
The properties between the two kinds vary widely. The strength is higher with PET-C, but its impact resistance is low. For PET-A it is the other way around.
Polyethylene terephthalate has bad insulation properties and does not tolerate hot water.
The synthesis of this plastic can be completely reversed, thus it is possible to recycle PET.
